Buying Guide: Vinyl

BUYING GUIDE: VINYL

Vinyl tiles and sheet goods are called resilient flooring — they’re flexible and slightly soft underfoot. They’re tough, durable and virtually maintenance-free. Vinyl comes in an array of colors and patterns at relatively modest cost. Although you’ll pay as little as $1 per square foot, there are fewer style options among the less-expensive types.

Vinyl products are backed with a layer of felt. Cushioned vinyl is backed with a thin layer of foam that offers an extra measure of comfort and safety. In general, a thicker vinyl surface means better quality and higher price. Thicker vinyl can have a textured surface that looks like real stone and wood.

Vinyl flooring has a wear layer on its upper surface that helps resist stains and scratches. The best vinyl products provide warranties on the wear layer of as much as 15 years, and you can expect good-quality vinyl to last 20 years.
Pros: Especially good at fending off wear, dents, scratches, discoloration from sunlight, and stains. Easy installation, particularly for tiles or planks, and more color and design choices are available these days.

Cons: While the premium brands can mimic the look of stone, tile, and even oak, even the best products still look like vinyl up close. Top-of-the-line vinyl can cost as much or more than the best solid hardwood and laminate floors.

Waterproof vs. Water Resistant

Knowing the difference can save  your floors

laminate-flooring-oak-and-flooring

It doesn’t seem like there is much of a difference, but there is. Waterproof means that it can withstand any amount of water, from a small spill to a flood, and be just fine. Water resistant means that it can take on a little water for a short time. Anything after that will more than likely cause damage.

Many types of vinyl flooring are waterproof and/or highly water resistant. Laminate, on the other hand, is made out of recycled hardwood, so it is not waterproof.  Due to its melamine wear layer, it has a tough finish, which resists scratches and may have minor protection against a small amount of water. But, like hardwood, laminate does not do well with standing water or high humidity, regardless of whether this water is topical (on top) or seeping into the subfloor from below. If laminate floors become really wet, they will get ruined and buckle.

Water resistance in flooring means that the particular element of flooring has been designed to withstand water better than it normally would. With hard surfaces, most flooring is designed to be able to have some water on top for a while before it will soak through, giving you time to take care of the spill before it can affect the floor. Just about every laminate product claims this. The aluminum oxide coating most of them have is pretty much waterproof, but the seams or gaps between planks, aren’t, so the floor isn’t. In those gaps, you usually have an exposed core, and may eventually soak in water.

So, laminate flooring is NOT waterproof.  There is a common misperception out there that laminate is waterproof, and I believe this is due to the fact that many customers mistakenly confuse vinyl and laminate flooring.

If you feel that hardwood is not a good option for an area due to water or humidity, it is also a good idea to avoid laminate.

Laminate warranties usually do not apply to water damage, including but not limited to water damage caused by flooding, standing water (water that remains on the floor longer than 30 minutes), leaking pipes, mechanical failures, appliance leaks, or pet urine. be aware of what you are getting yourself into before purchasing!

BONUS: Scratch Proof vs. Scratch Resistant

The terms scratch proof and scratch resistant are different by definition, but used synonymously by manufacturers to promote their products. Scratch proof, if taken literally, would mean that the product is able to withstand any kind of abrasion and not bear any scratches. Scratch resistant, on the other hand essentially means that the product is able to withstand minor scratches. Scratch proof, therefore, stands for more durability than scratch resistant products.

Floor Warming

DITRA-HEAT combines the flexibility of loose heating cables with the ease of installation of mat systems. Cables can be placed wherever heat is desired, without creating height differences in the floor. Self-leveling compounds are not required to encapsulate the cables, significantly reducing installation time and effort.

Uncoupling

Tile has been successfully installed for thousands of years by incorporating an uncoupling layer, or forgiving shear interface, within the tile assembly. DITRA-HEAT provides uncoupling through its geometric configuration, which allows for in-plane movement that effectively neutralizes the differential movement stresses between the substrate and the tile, thus eliminating the major cause of cracking and delaminating of the tiled surface.

Waterproofing

DITRA-HEAT provides reliable waterproofing. Its polypropylene composition protects the substrate from moisture penetration, which is particularly important in today’s building environment where most substrates are moisture-sensitive.

Vapor Management

The free space on the underside of DITRA-HEAT provides a route for excess moisture and vapor to escape from the substrate that could otherwise cause damage to the tile covering above. Thus, DITRA-HEAT effectively manages moisture beneath the tile covering.

Support/load distribution

When placed on a solid foundation, columns or pillars can support tremendous loads. The same physical principle applies to DITRA-HEAT installations. Column-like mortar structures are formed in and between the studs on the surface of the matting. Loads are transferred from the tile covering through these column-like mortar structures to the substrate. Since DITRA-HEAT is virtually incompressible within the tile assembly, the advantages of uncoupling are achieved without sacrificing point load distribution capabilities.”
